Parent Information
Welcome to Cub Scouts Pack 3328! We hope the information presented to you in the next few pages will help you get off to a good start for the coming year. Please keep this book marked as a handy reference for future information needs regarding Pack policy and uniform information.
Cub Scouting is about families. It is not an activity where you drop off your child, he “practices,” then you pick him up. Dad, mom, brothers, sisters can ALL be involved in scouting. Although lots of activities may be accomplished at den or pack meetings, many of the advancement work will need to be completed at home with the family’s help and involvement. In this regard, please become familiar with the Tiger, Wolf, Bear or Webelos Activity book, particularly the parent section of the book.
To begin with, your son will be in:
PACK:........ 3328
DISTRICT:. Red-Tailed Hawk District (RTH)
COUNCIL:.. Heart of America Council
The Heart of America Council encompasses the Kansas City area, which includes its surrounding areas. The Pack is made up of Dens, which are groups of boys usually in the same grade as that of your son. Each Den has a specific numeral attached to it. Collectively, we are Cub Scouts, and are members of the national organization, the Boy Scouts of America (B.S.A.).
CHARTERED ORGANIZATION
All Packs have a Chartered Organization, which acts as a ‘sponsor.’ Arbor Creek Elementary PTO charters pack 3328, which is the site of the monthly pack meeting (generally one Tuesday of each month, 6:30 p.m.). These meetings will be about 1 hour long.
PACK COMMITTEE
Pack 3328 is run by registered Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Adult Leaders who make up the Pack Committee. Following is the current pack leadership. If the number of cub scouts registering exceeds a manageable den size of 10, additional dens would be formed and leaders identified.

Pack 3328 Dues
2010-2011 school year - $70.00
Dues are comprised of two fees -
$60.00 – This annual fee at the beginning of the pack year in August/September. The fee stays in the pack bank account and is used to purchase: the many awards that will be presented to your son throughout the year, his Pinewood Derby car, and expenses related to the Blue and Gold banquet, day camp, etc. [See Attachment]
$11.00 (B.S.A. dues)– This annual fee is paid upon registration and annually at the beginning of every school year in which your son participates in Cub Scouts. It must be collected from every registered Scout and Adult leader for the annual rechartering of the Pack. This fee is for yearly membership to B.S.A., which includes insurance coverage for the boys and Adult Leaders at all Scout functions.
Throughout the Scout year, your Den leader or Pack Treasurer will be collecting money for various Pack functions and activities. These will be addressed in the monthly newsletters that will be e-mailed to you, and also via information given to you at Den meetings. The following is a reminder of what fees are required for your son’s involvement in the Pack.
Optional
Boys Life Magazine [$12.00] – It is suggested, but certainly optional, that Cub Scouts subscribe to Boy's Life magazine. In order for our pack to be considered for the Quality unit award, we need a high percentage of Scouts to subscribe to Boy’s Life magazine. In order for our pack to be considered for quality recognition, a high subscription percentage is required. Many boys get a special thrill from receiving their own mail.
The Pack maintains a separate bank account with records being kept by a Pack Treasurer, who reports monthly to the Pack Committee.
FUNDRAISING
We will be having several fundraisers during the year. Please be involved in one of the fundraisers to help our Pack. Monies from these activities will help us fund various activities that we have during the year, ie the Blue and Gold, the Pinewood Derby and other events that we decide upon, such as camp outs.
CUB SCOUTING AND YOU
When your son earns his first badge, the Bobcat, he learns the “Law of the Pack”. These laws are vital to the success of your cub scout and the pack.
The Cub Scout follows Akela
The Cub Scout helps the pack go.
The Pack helps the Cub Scout grow.
The Cub Scout gives good will.
Throughout the year you may be asked to assist on different committees, and at different events. Please volunteer freely, and give of yourself when called upon to help. You will find it a rewarding experience, and one in which you and your son will remember that you did together. Your help will give the pack a chance to keep its part of the promise, “The Pack Helps the Cub Scout Grow”. Remember, the Pack is all of us working together... leaders, parents, and Scouts.
Note: Optional activities may require additional fees. Participation in all events is not necessary. We strive to make opportunities available.
Unlike other programs your son might enroll in, Cub Scouting involves the whole family, no matter what size or parental make-up exists in the home. As parent, your roll varies from rank to rank.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Awards and recognition is a big part of scouting. Your son is encouraged to "do his best" as he completes the rank requirements outlined in his handbook. In doing so, he will earn beads for his "Progress Toward Rank." These beads are displayed on an emblem worn on his official uniform. He can proudly show his advancement over the course of the year.
Some scouts will begin earning their rank and crossing over to the next rank as early as February at a special ceremony during the Blue and Gold Banquet. Others will earn their rank in the following months.
Note: All requirements to earn that year's rank must be completed by May 31. Remember, you may have requirements that need to be worked on at home, so look over your scout’s handbook and sign off!
Elective activities (also listed in the handbook) will keep your son engaged in scouting while other members of his den finish their requirements. Completions of electives allow scouts to earn additional recognition (Tigers – yellow elective beads; Wolves and Bears - Arrow Points).
Belt Loops and Pins for the boys can also be earn by participating in different activities. These awards are for both academic and sports activities that the boys are engaged in during the year. God and Me awards can also be earned through Cub Scouts. Ask your Scout Leaders about these awards.
Bobcat Badge All scouts will earn their Bobcat badge prior to beginning work on their rank (see handbook). This badge represents the "Key to Scouting" – that they (and you) understand the basic concepts of scouting.
Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Rank At the Tiger, Wolf, and Bear ranks, Cub Scouting centers around monthly themes that have lots of appeal to boys at this age. During den meetings, the boys will be playing games, working on requirements, and having fun!
UNIFORMS, PATCHES AND ACCESSORIES
Scouts in uniform are more conscious of their role in Cub Scouting, and feel a sense of pride and belonging when wearing one. His official uniform provides a proper place for the display of badges earned and a way for him to ‘show the world’ that he has been rewarded for his achievements.
In addition, Scouts in uniform create a strong, positive, visible image in the community that helps to strengthen the important ties between the public and the Scouting organization.
1. Where to Buy: Uniform, belt, patches and accessories are available at Nill Bros. at 135th and Mur-Len. For a real treat, take a drive down to Scout Shop at the Heart of America Council’s headquarters at I-435 and Holmes. In addition to uniforms, they carry everything you see in the Scout Catalog or online and then some. Enjoy the time spent there! Your son will love it!
2. Official Blue Cub Scout Shirt: The main article of the Cub Scout uniform is the navy shirt, as it displays the rank of the Scout, and identifies him as belonging to a certain Den,Pack, and Council. When purchasing a new uniform, remember that your son is growing and if, for example, he is now a newly signed up Wolf Cub, get an extra size larger, so he can wear it for his Bear year as well. Although jeans are discouraged by BSA members of Pack 3328 generally wear them with their uniform shirt neatly tucked in.
3. Official Webelo Shirt: Once your scout achieves the rank of Webelo I, they will need the official khaki shirt, plaid scarf, and Webelo tie slide.
4. Activity T-Shirt: Your scout will receive his shirt with registration. Pack 3328 also has activity t-shirts for sale and are available in both youth and adult sizes. Parents and siblings are welcome to purchase a “class B” shirt. These t-shirts are appropriate for many of our outdoor activities, camp and for den meetings. This is worn at events that are messy and low keyed, like the Pinewood Derby, a Hayrack Ride or a den meeting.
5. Patches: In addition to purchasing the uniform, there will be many patches that need to be sewn on your son’s shirt. Please pay close attention as to where on the uniform these need to be placed. You can apply the badges with Badge Magic that is available at Nill Brothers and the Scout Shop.

MEETINGS
All Cub Scout parents are welcomed and encouraged to become involved in the pack by attending monthly committee meetings.
Den meetings ........ Dates are determined be den leaders and are generally monthly or bimonthly. They may be held after school or in the evening. Tiger Den meetings are generally held in the evening, as parents are required to attend and plan meetings as well.
Pack meetings ...... Generally held a Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm at Arbor Creek. We try to keep the meeting time to 1 hour and focus on our boys.
DENS
Lots of Cub Scouting happens in the den. The Council provides monthly themes to assist leaders in planning activities that are fun for the boys, but also build character. Please remember that your son’s Den Leader is a volunteer putting forth his or her time and effort to help your boy ‘do his best’ to earn his badges, participate in the fun, and gain all the positive values that the Cub Scout program offers. Please assist them in the following ways.
Ø Please have your son to den meetings on time. Your den leaders have lots of activities planned and it is important to have the whole group together to begin the evening’s fun and projects.
Ø If there is a den fee involved, please pay it promptly. The den leaders will need reimbursement.
Please observe the followings guidelines in regards to Pack meetings.
Ø Please accompany your son to his Pack meeting. Pack meetings are a family event - brothers, sisters, grandparents are invited, but most of all, YOU! We appreciate your attendance not only to help keep order at the meeting (things can get a bit rowdy. Bring your camera!)
Ø Please arrive to Pack meetings on time. Plan on arriving at least ten minutes early to settle in, confer with your son’s Den leader about current events, chat with friends, etc., as the meeting needs to begin on time. If your son is helping out as a member of a flag ceremony, or assisting with other Pack meeting activities, it is imperative to have him there early.
Ø Uniform! The Pack meeting is definitely the place to wear your official Cub Scout uniform, tucked in - looking sharp! You never know when a uniform inspection might take place.
Most of all, we hope to make Pack meetings entertaining, enriching, and FUN!!!
