Webelos Den:

Webelos is a 20 month program for 4th and 5th grade boys to prepare to join a Boy Scout troop while learning outdoors skills and participating in 20 different activity badges. There is a gradual change from being an 'adult-run' den to being a 'boy-run' patrol ready to fit right into an adventurous scouting troop. This migration requires the parents and den leaders to give the scouts more and more control, decision-making power, and responsibility as they progress in skills, abilities, and maturity.

 Essays by our Webelos Den

I went with two other scouts from my weblos den and we went to an owl prowl at Ernie Miller Nature Park. Two naturalists showed us some owls and we went outside and listened to owls. We saw a tiny screech owl, a medium sized barred owl, a big great horned owl, and a medium sized barn owl. When I heard the barn owls screech, it sounded kind of scary. After we saw those owls at the center, we walked around the park in the dark and had to be quiet. The naturalist played a tape so the owls could make the real sounds. I saw three owls and heard a few. One flew right over us. One interesting fact I learned was that owls ears are right next to their eyes.

The Owl Prowl I would highly recommend. It’s very calm, quiet, and relaxing. You mostly see Barred, Screech, Barn, and Great Horned owls in Kansas. There are not as many Screech Owls in Kansas anymore. You do get to see all 4 types before the walk.

When you are out walking, you tap someone if you see an owl. I saw 2 and heard a few. But watch your step! You could fall off the trail if you’re not careful.

We went to Ernie Miller Nature Park and a guide there taught us how to use a compass. Directions are North, South, East and West. We walked around in the surrounding woods and found yellow flags that had directions on them. We all took turns being the leader and did our best to follow the directions. We even discovered a few new insects that wed never seen before. Unfortunately we didnt get to keep the compasses, but we all learned a lot about directions and it was fun and exciting.
